Dale Barltrop and the Australian String Quartet Visit FGSHS

On Friday 14 July, we were visited by Australia’s premier chamber music ensemble, the Australian String Quartet. The Quartet’s First Violin chair is held by Dale Barltrop, former Ferny Grover (graduated 1997), recently returned to Australia from North America taking up not only his position with the Quartet, but also as Concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Dale and his colleagues Francesca Hiew, Stephen King, and Sharon Grigoryan took part in a workshop and performance with our Ferny Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Choir.

The Quartet’s skill and musicianship is extraordinary, and it was a special opportunity for us to be able to see them play at close quarters.  But perhaps the most striking feature of the event was the instant and enthusiastic rapport between our students and our guests, creating a joyous music-making atmosphere that was remarked on by many of the parents and friends who came to swell the audience.

The ASQ visit is one of the highlights of our musical year to date and we look forward to building the relationship and undertaking more such projects soon.
