Greater Brisbane Schools Sport (GBS)

GBS – The Greater Brisbane Schools Competition – was founded in 2004 with the aim of providing students with high level competition amongst South-East Queensland’s biggest schools. The competition has evolved to meet the changing needs of school communities and is now run as a series of gala days spread throughout Terms 1-3.

Participating schools include: Albany Creek SHS, Brisbane Bayside State College, Ferny Grove SHS, Kenmore SHS and MacGregor SHS. Sports offered throughout the year include netball (girls only), futsal, badminton, basketball, touch and volleyball. Gala days are held on a Saturday with start times around 8.00am and finish times around 2.30pm, although every carnival will have its own subtle variations. Venues are established at the beginning of each year

Teams are set according to year levels. In 2015, the team format will be Junior Boys and Girls (Years 7 & 8), Middle Boys and Girls (Years 9 & 10) and Senior Boys and Girls (Years 11 & 12). Each team will be assigned a coach to prepare and guide the team from selection trials through to the gala day. Students are expected to attend each training session leading into their competition. Training days and times will vary and will be negotiated where possible to accommodate individual requirements. Each team member will be given a uniform on the day to play in.

Matches are played in round robin style format, with timeframes shortened to better fit the carnival style day. Teams vie for championship honours at each gala day. This implies that students will play a minimum of four games at each carnival. A Final is then played to determine the overall winner for each age group on the day. Points are allocated depending on the finishing position of each team. All teams' points are added together to determine a champion school for each gala day. These points also roll over to determine a champion school for the year. Individual awards are also presented at each gala day, with a 'best and fairest' medal awarded to one player in each age division.

Ferny Grove SHS is a founding member of the GBS fraternity and has been at the forefront of results and competition development over the last eleven years. The school has a proud history in GBS competition and is looking to build on this in 2016.

Coaches for each team will be released in 2016 and trials and training dates will be released no later than six weeks before each carnival.
