International students

Ferny Grove State High School has welcomed students through the Education Queensland International Student Program since 2008.  Students have come from Brazil, China, Germany, Italy, Japan and Switzerland.

We have a long history of successfully hosting visits from exchange students from around the world to study at our school. Our school has for many years been involved in sister school relationships with schools in Germany and we now have a sister school relationship with a school in Central Java.

Our school motto is "Always Aim High".  We live by our motto and strive to provide an educational experience of an extremely high standard.
We offer students an opportunity to:
  • extend their education across academic, cultural, sporting and citizenship spheres.  Our students achieve highly and most go on to university.  Our results consistently place us among the top performing state schools in Queensland.  We offer an excellent choral and instrumental music program,  agricultural science, and a wide variety of sports that can be played at interschool competition.

  • engage in a wide range of extra and co-curricular activities which will provide life balance and add to personal development as global citizens;

  • extend their knowledge of English and the Australian culture.  Through participation in regular home and school life and curricular excursions and camps, international students can immerse themselves in Australian culture.

Ferny Plus Program

Enrolment at Ferny Grove State High School provides a full suite of subjects whilst also offering our Ferny Plus Program to all our international students.

This program provides the following lessons at no additional cost:

  • 2 additional English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) lessons for senior students per week and 1 additional EALD lesson for junior students per week in a before school class.
  • 4 additional tutorials in Maths, Science and English for senior students (Years 11 and 12) with experienced senior teachers each Wednesday.

All international students will finish school at the usual time on Wednesdays, having attended the support services provided as described above.  The Ferny Plus Program is designed to provide supported learning opportunities for all international students to optimise their learning.  Students are also encouraged to continue with their own private study and access electronic and hard-copy resources in the school Resource Centre to maximise their learning outcomes.

Homestay Families

Ferny Grove State High School has established a register of families in the local area who welcome international students into their homes.  International students are matched to homestay families according to wishes and interests and the homestay coordinator works closely with these families to ensure that the students' welfare is maintained.  Please click on the link under "Related Links" to learn more about our International Student Program Homestay provision.

Ferny Grove State High School, with its proximity to the city by train and its beautiful setting in leafy suburbs with extensive bikeways, offers international students the opportunity to have engaging educational experiences in a peaceful setting.
